What Debian distribution should I use?
There are currently three Debian distributions:
- stable: This
distribution is the most tested and is officially supported by the
members of the Debian community. Each time a security problem
appears, a patch will be made available as soon as possible. This
version should be installed on production servers.
- unstable:
This is the distribution used by Debian developpers. As the name
shows, it may be totally unstable in the sense where sometimes
services will not function correctly. However, security problems
are usually dealt of with very quickly.
- testing: This
distribution allows Debian developpers to test what will become
later the next stable
distribution. A package installed in testing should be
available on all other architectures supported by the Debian
project as well. However, no effort will be made to fix security
problems in a timely manner, because of lack of resources and
because of contradictions with the goals of testing.
To be clear: unless you don't care about stability or security, you
should be using
ONLY the
stable Debian
distribution.
